"I am my hair." - Toni Morrison
It was as if Toni Morrison had spoken directly to me through her words. This simple yet powerful quote helped me understand that my hair is an integral part of my identity. It is a unique expression of my heritage, my culture, and my self.
Growing up, I was surrounded by messages that told me my natural hair wasn't "good enough." Straight, silky locks were the epitome of beauty. This idea was reinforced by magazines, television, and even the opinions of my family and friends. I spent countless hours and resources trying to achieve that "ideal" look, subjecting my hair to chemicals, heat, and manipulation.
One day, I stumbled upon a documentary about the history and significance of black hair. It opened my eyes to the deep-rooted cultural significance of our hair, and I began to appreciate the beauty in its versatility, resilience, and strength. That was the day I decided to embrace my natural hair and embark on a journey of self-love and acceptance.
Discovering the Richness of My Roots
As I dove deeper into the world of natural hair care, I discovered a thriving community of people who shared my newfound passion. They were eager to exchange stories, tips, and support. This sense of belonging was invaluable in helping me navigate the challenges that came with transitioning to natural hair.

It was during this time that I was introduced to locs, a natural hairstyle that would ultimately become a significant part of my journey. I decided to start my own loc journey, which spanned an incredible seven years. Embracing locs allowed me to connect even deeper with my roots and appreciate the beauty of my hair's natural texture.
The Transformation Within
Embracing my natural hair and locs has not only transformed my physical appearance but has also had a profound impact on my sense of self. It has taught me to celebrate my unique beauty and to challenge the narrow, Eurocentric standards of attractiveness that I had internalized.
As I became more confident in my natural beauty, I found myself drawn to other aspects of my culture and heritage that I had once overlooked. My journey of self-love led me to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the richness and diversity of the black experience.
Passing It On
Now, I am on a mission to share my story and encourage others to embrace their natural hair, too. I want to inspire a new generation to redefine beauty, reclaim their roots, and celebrate the power of self-love.
